I’ve lived in the Midwest for most of my life and there are definitely some distinctive dishes that come from this part of the country. We have things like Hot Dishes – some would call them casseroles but not here in the Midwest – goulashes that I think differ from the traditional goulashes. We also have the famous Juicy Lucy that a couple bars in Minnesota tout that it is their invention and claim to fame!

No matter what the dish is you can almost bet money that the food is going to be delicious, hearty, and very comforting. From classics like Tater Tot Hotdish to Swedish Meatballs the Midwest definitely has some distinct meals that you will want to make over and over again – especially in meatball form!

    FEATURED Midwestern Meatball Recipes

A bowl of Swedish Meatballs served over egg noodles with homemade rolls

    Swedish Meatballs

I never had Swedish Meatballs until I moved to Minnesota. It’s actually funny too – I read recently as I was doing research on the origin of this meatball that Sweden admitted a few years ago that this meatball originated in Turkey. There was a lot of twitter talk and obvious disappointment about the tweet that Sweden put out there. Whether these meatballs originated in Turkey or Sweden they are different and delicious. They swim around in a flavorful gravy that is seasoned with allspice, ginger, cloves and nutmeg. I know it sounds a little weird but trust me they are yummy.

There are a lot of variations of this recipe and how the actual meatball is made as well. I’ve talked to folks that mix in mashed potatoes into the meat to make the meatball – which is definitely on my list to try. This recipe is my take on a lot of the recipes I’ve looked at and some family secrets from friends all mixed together to make my amazing version of this classic Midwestern dish.

    Chicken Paprikash Meatballs

I think since it’s cold in Minnesota I’ve been working on all the amazing dishes that warm you up on a snowy day. I started making Paprikash years ago. I love trying new things and look for recipes that use different ingredients that I’m interested in working with and are things that I know my husband will eat and like. This traditional Hungarian dish is easy to throw together and you can serve it so many ways including over egg noodles or mashed potatoes.

I like this recipe because it’s a simple chicken meatball that doesn’t take too much time to throw together or to cook in the oven. I like making meatballs in the oven because it’s an easy cleanup and it gives you time to get the sauce put together and cook the noodles.

This is such a warm an comforting dish it makes for a great weeknight dinner staple. There’s nothing better than a meatball in a rich sauce over some egg noodles.

    Juicy Lucy Meatballs

Juicy Lucy’s are a South Minneapolis creation and there is definitely some dispute on where this amazing burger came from. In fact, there are two different bars in Minneapolis that have been arguing over who created this cheese stuffed burger since the 1950’s. You can check out the recipe to get more information about the two bars that claim the invention of this burger and hopefully you’ll be able to visit Minneapolis sometime to try each of them. I’m not telling you which one is my favorite…

I thought this idea of a cheese-stuffed burger sounded like a great meatball. These meatballs are a great bite-size version of the great Juicy Lucy. There are so many different cheeses you can stuff a Juicy Lucy with and there are just as many endless possibilities for stuffing these meatballs. In the future, there will be many different versions of this meatball to pay tribute to the creative Juicy Lucy burgers you can find in Minnesota.

Sloppy Joe stuffed meatballs served as sliders garnished with tomatoes and cucumbers

Beneke’s Hideaway Sloppy Joe Stuffed Meatballs

This recipe came from a couple of things: one was I wanted to add some recipes to my Midwestern Meatball collection so I decided Sloppy Joes were the way to go, second, this recipe comes from our friends up in Outing Minnesota. I have never heard of this type of Sloppy Joe until we met them and it seems to be a midwestern thing. Since we got this recipe I found that more and more of our Minnesotan friends are familiar with it as well. Go ahead and click on this recipe to find out what makes it so special.

Our friends up north have an annual party to celebrate his birthday and this Sloppy Joe recipe is what they serve to their guests. We were told that this year they have enough ingredients – including the “secret ingredient” to make 30 pounds of Sloppy Joes to share with everyone invited to the party. I can’t wait to celebrate with them over some good old Sloppy Joe’s, but I’m telling you as a birthday gift, I will be bringing them some Sloppy Joe stuffed meatballs as well!
